James Hetfield: 7 composições que mostram como ele é bom letrista

Ainda que sejam importantes e reconhecidas no metal, as letras das músicas nem sempre estão em foco ou primeiro plano quando se fala sobre os grandes clássicos do estilo. Muitas vezes, priorizamos riffs, melodias, construções rítmicas, entre outros fatores ao pautarmos o gênero.

Em uma entrevista recente ao site Philly.com, o guitarrista do Metallica, Kirk Hammett, destacou algo que muitos não percebem, mas é verdade: James Hetfield, frontman da banda, é um grande letrista.

"James é um poeta, cara. Sempre que um disco está ficando pronto, fico surpreso com seu talento com as palavras, sua sensibilidade para com a natureza humana e o diálogo humano", afirmou. "Você não consegue isso dele quando está conversando ou passando tempo com ele, mas ele é muito sensível e bem afinado."

Diante dessa declaração, separei sete composições de James Hetfield com letras muito boas. Essa lista não tem o intuito de estabelecer um ranking ou apontar que as escolhidas são as melhores: são apenas sete canções que se destacaram em meu ver. Citações adicionais nos comentários são bem-vindas.

"Fade To Black" (presente no disco "Ride The Lightning", 1984)

A primeira baladinha do Metallica aborda um tema nada leve. A canção, basicamente, trata de tendências suicidas.

A composição trata de alguém que está prestes a abrir mão da vida. E, ainda que de forma figurada, essa desistência pode se refletir no que acontecia com o Metallica naquele período.

Na época em que "Fade To Black" foi composta, o equipamento do Metallica havia sido roubado. Os músicos, que exageravam na bebida naquele período, também foram expulsos da casa de seu empresário por se alcoolizarem demais.

Em tom depressivo, James Hetfield, que também havia perdido a mãe em 1979 - e demorou bastante para superar isso -, colocou suas frustrações para fora e, aparentemente, elevou a um nível que soou como tendência suicida. Liricamente, casou com a composição melódica, de tonalidade mais triste e com um clímax intenso em seu fim.

"Master Of Puppets" (presente no disco "Master Of Puppets", 1986)

Um dos maiores clássicos do metal é um relato bastante realista sobre as drogas e o álcool. Os efeitos negativos são destacados ao longo da letra, diferente de composições de outras bandas, que tratavam apenas do que havia de "positivo" em estar chapado.

Em entrevistas, James Hetfield confirma que a letra tinha o intuito de transmitir essa ideia. "(A letra) fala bastante sobre drogas. Sobre como as coisas se modificam. Ao invés de você controlar o que está fazendo, são as drogas que te controlam", disse, em uma ocasião, à Thrasher Magazine.

"One" (presente no disco "...And Justice For All", 1988)

Uma das letras mais complexas do Metallica, "One" é baseada no romance "Johnny vai à guerra" (1939), de Dalton Trumbo. A obra retrata a história de um soldado cujo corpo é praticamente destruído após ele ter ido à Primeira Guerra Mundial.

A composição narra que esse soldado ficou sem braços, pernas, olhos, boca, nariz e orelhas. Ou seja: ele não pode fazer praticamente nada. O único órgão que permaneceu intacto foi o seu cérebro, o que o deixou preso em seu próprio corpo.

A letra descreve tal sensação com maestria e a melodia dá um pano de fundo perfeito para a narrativa. Com o clipe, que tem cenas da adaptação cinematográfica para "Johnny vai à guerra", o "produto" fica completo.

"The Unforgiven" (presente no disco "Metallica", 1991)

"The Unforgiven" representa o início de uma trilogia de músicas da mesma temática. Na primeira canção, James Hetfield relata a luta de um indivíduo contra pessoas que gostam de subjugá-lo.

Interpreto "The Unforgiven" como uma das composições mais pessoais de James Hetfield - e é por isso que acabou ficando tão boa. A letra é um reflexo dos problemas que James teve na infância e adolescência.

Na infância, James tinha problemas para entender a religiosidade de sua família. Na adolescência, os problemas se intensificaram: o pai abandonou a casa quando ele tinha apenas 13 anos, enquanto a mãe nunca conseguiu cuidar muito bem de James e de sua irmã.

Esse cenário acabou transformando James Hetfield em uma espécie de desajustado. Ele já relatou algumas vezes que nunca conseguiu se incluir na escola, nem ter grandes amizades ao longo da adolescência.

Tudo isso se refletiu nessa composição, em meu ver. Sempre subjugado, James Hetfield tentou, até atingir certo estado de maturidade, agradar a todos - e esqueceu de si. Enxergo os versos desta forma, ciente da história de vida de Hetfield, ainda que a canção possa ser interpretada de diversas maneiras.

"Wherever I May Roam" (presente no disco "Metallica", 1991)

Mais uma letra do "Black Album" de caráter pessoal, "Wherever I May Roam" é uma expressão praticamente coletiva das dificuldades pelas quais o Metallica passou na década de 1980. O sonho de se tornar uma estrela do rock movimentava cada músico do grupo, entretanto, a saudade de casa, dos familiares e dos amigos sempre dificultava a situação.

"Wherever I May Roam" resume a sensação do quarteto - que, àquela altura, já contava com Jason Newsted no baixo - com relação à vida na estrada. Além disso, serve como uma espécie de retrato do motivo pelo qual o Metallica desfrutou de tanto sucesso a partir do "Black Album": muito trabalho.

Talvez a única música de amor do Metallica, "Nothing Else Matters" tem sentido ambíguo. E pode ser interpretada de diversas maneiras.

A canção foi composta em 1990, inicialmente, por James Hetfield, enquanto ele estava no telefone com sua namorada à época. Ele apresentou a composição, já com seu riff inicial, a Lars Ulrich, que insistiu para que a canção fosse aproveitada. James relutou, mas, no fim, acabou cedendo, especialmente após insistência do produtor Bob Rock.

Em uma entrevista à MTV, James Hetfield disse que fez a música com base no "amor fraterno". Não necessariamente entre familiares de sangue, mas, sim, entre amigos que se consideram irmãos.

A canção pode obter ambas as interpretações, visto que não se fala sobre romance, declaradamente, em nenhum trecho. E essa possível ambiguidade a torna uma das letras mais charmosas do Metallica.

"Bleeding Me" (presente no disco "Load", 1996)

Uma das grandes músicas de "Load" traz um pouco dos problemas pelos quais James Hetfield passou, em especial, nos anos 1990. Inicialmente, o significado da letra não havia sido revelado por ninguém - Jason Newsted achava que ela falava sobre alguém que estava sendo torturado mentalmente -, mas a canção fala sobre as batalhas internas de Hetfield.

A revelação foi feita pelo próprio James, em entrevista à revista "Playboy", em 2001. "Na época de 'Load', senti que queria parar de beber. Pensava: 'talvez eu esteja perdendo algo, todos parecem estar tão felizes... também quero estar feliz'. Minha vida era planejada a partir de uma ressaca. 'Os Misfits vão tocar na cidade nesta sexta, então sábado é um dia de ressaca'. Perdi muitos dias na minha vida", disse.

Ele complementa: "Ir à terapia por um ano me fez aprender bastante sobre mim. Há muitas coisas que te assustam quando você está crescendo, você não sabe o motivo. 'Bleeding Me' é sobre isso: eu estava tentando sangrar tudo que havia de ruim dentro de mim. Quando eu estava na terapia, descobri coisas feias ali. Um ponto obscuro".
